When I go snowboarding for the first time, should I wear one of those skating wrist guards under my gloves?
The ones with a bit of a plastic guard on the wrist?
I think it’s a good idea. I know a guy who broke one of his wrists each of the first two times he tried snowboarding. People tend to catch themselves with their hands which is why a broken wrist is probably the most common injury in snowboarding. I’d probably still wear them if they weren’t a little annoying having to carry with you and if I hadn’t already lost two pairs. Anyways, wear them until you’ve gotten the hang of it.

They’re really annoying so I’d say no. Think of it like wearing knee pads to go bowling. (They offer them as an extra precaution but really you don’t need them.)
Just know how to fall.
If you HAVE to fall to the front, the best way to fall is on your forearms so you don’t bust your wrist or funny bones. But alot of the time you just bust your butt – and we have a natural cushion there :]

I’ve only boarded about 10-12 times and have fallen a few times on my knees and one big time…. almost broke my wrist. I would use them the first few times out just til you know you won’t "knee jerk" stick your hand out to catch yourself.

Protective gear when snowboarding will prove to make a BIG difference especially on your first time.
Having been a snowboard instructor I would highly recommend wearing a helmet and bum pad (Burton makes the Impact Shorts) to protect your tailbone and hips – believe me, it will save you much frustration on your first day on the slopes. These two items are in my mind the bare minimum protective gear for learning how to snowboard. The bum pad will keep your cheeks from feeling the cold snow if you have to sit down to strap into your bindings after each time up the chairlift – Bonus!
It is also very recommended to protect your WRISTS, knees and elbows. I would recommend snowboard wrist guards, knee pads and elbow pads. There are 2 types of wrist guards appropriate for snowboarding – over the glove types and built into the glove types. I would not recommend putting guards under your gloves. This will diminish how well the gloves will keep your hands warm. Also having the plastic outside the gloves allows the plastic to take the impact and you will have some insulation padding between the plastic and your wrist.
Trust me. You’ll have a much better chance of wanting to try snowboarding again IF you didn’t take a serious beating with big bruises on your first time out on the slopes.

you can if you want. it won’t get in the way and its good as a safety precaution. Some people here said you don’t fall on your wrists. Personally, I disagree with that, I’ve seen people break their wrists snowboarding. So whether you fall on your wrists or not an extra safety precaution is not a bad idea. They also sell snowboarding gloves with wrist guards built in, but they are pretty pricey.
Since its your first time you should wear them. You don’t know how to fall correctly(on to your forearms), and if you fall, it may just be a natural reaction for you to put your hands out.
So just wear them for your first few times out until you know you will fall safely.

YES. I have been snowboarding for about 6 years and i still wear mine, after breaking my wrist on the terrain park, i always wear them. They arent too annoying and if you want you can get the snowboard gloves that have the wrist guard inside, that is what i have and i love it.
